The real science
The Fitzroy River turtle in Australia pumps water in and out of its rear end. Two sacs lined with blood-filled folds pull oxygen out of the water the way gills do, so it can stay underwater for long periods. It only works in fast, clean rivers, and that's why the species is now threatened.
